Effective Squirrel Removal in Toronto & Mississauga
Squirrels are curious in nature which, for some property owners, can result in nuisance behavior. Their small size and excellent climbing abilities allow them to invade all sorts of spaces and structures including chimneys, attics, soffits, dryer vents, sheds and basements just to name a few. If you need squirrel removal in Mississauga, Toronto or any part of the GTA, call the wildlife technicians at ICE Pest.
Techniques for Effective Squirrel Removal in Toronto & Mississauga
Our technicians at ICE will come to your home or place of business and conduct a comprehensive property inspection. We will then determine where the main entry point is for the squirrels and install a One-Way Door System. This humane method allows the intruding squirrels to vacate with ease. After installation, the spring mechanism on the door closes and locks behind them to prevent re-entry. The roof inspection will also determine if there are any other weak spots or possible entry points. ICE will provide you with a quote outlining costs related to repairing weak spots and potential entry points. Our goal is to secure your roof and prevent any further damage the squirrels will do to try and re-enter.
Upon completion of the exclusion and prevention process, we will provide you with a written 3-year guarantee on all squirrel removal techniques in Toronto, Mississauga and the GTA.
Habitat & Behaviours of Squirrels
Squirrel nests are most commonly made of grass in the branches of spruce trees. Nests are also excavated from witches’ broom – abnormally dense vegetative growth resulting from a rust disease – or cavities in the trunks of spruce or poplar trees. Each individual red squirrel has several nests within its territory and females with young move offspring between nests. Red squirrels experience severe early mortality (on average only 22% survive to one year of age). The survival probability, however, increases to age three at which point it begins to decrease again. Females that survive to one year of age have a life expectancy of 2.3 years and a maximum lifespan of eight years.
Squirrel Reproduction
Most females produce only one litter, however in some years they may breed twice. Litter sizes typically range from 1 to 5, but most litters contain 3 or 4 offspring. Offspring are pink and hairless at birth and weigh approximately 10-15 grams. Offspring grow at approximately 1.8 g/ day while nursing but do not reach adult body size until 125 days of age. Offspring first emerge from their natal nest at around 42 days of age but continue to nurse until approximately 70 days of age.
