It’s Spider Season! Should You Call Pest Control?
Every year, spiders begin moving indoors to look for a warm place to build their webs and catch prey. A spider may even lay eggs and cause an infestation which is why it’s a good idea to control the problem before it’s too late and contact a pest control company.
Here’s what you need to know:
The Common House Spider
Although there are roughly 40, 000 different species of spiders in the world, the house spider is the one most commonly found in Toronto homes.
Behaviours
Some spiders prefer moist environments, like basements, while others prefer dryer areas, like the upper corners of rooms. House spiders prefer the dark, but often build their webs near light sources that attract prey, including windows and light fixtures.
Lifecycle
Female house spiders can lay up to 250 eggs at a time. They deposit their eggs into a brown, oval-shaped sac and can produce up to 17 egg sacs in their lifetime, leading to over 4000 eggs! The spiders hatch and disperse within about one week. Adult spiders can live for just over one year. If a sac does hatch, you may begin to notice clusters of small spiders on your ceiling or walls.
Entering the Home
In the fall, spiders enter residential homes to look for prey and get out of the cold. They crawl through openings in windows and doors, or cracks around the frames so it’s important to plan ahead and be on the lookout for entry points before temperatures begin to drop.
Spider-Proofing Your Home
There are a few steps that you can take to prevent spiders from entering your home:
- Make sure that all windows are tightly-fitted and properly sealed
- Use weather stripping to seal gaps in door frames
- Make sure that all screens are in good repair
- Destroy existing webs
- Keep your home clean and free from other insects
House spiders are common in the Greater Toronto Area and many people in the region look to the services of professional pest control companies to rid their homes of the tiny intruders.
