While some ants are simply a nuisance, others are more dangerous. Carpenter ants are one species you don’t want invading your home or yard. We’ve compiled information to assist you in performing pest control in Toronto and surrounding areas.
Why You Should Get Rid of Carpenter Ants
Carpenter ants have a painful bite that can break the skin, but they are generally harmless. That said, they can do damage in other ways!
When left to their own devices, carpenter ants can potentially destroy your home from the inside. Their chewing action disintegrates decaying logs. If they build a nest in a home’s support beam, they will severely weaken the structure. Consider what they might do if they get their jaws on your wooden deck!
How to Remove Carpenter Ants
The best way to clear carpenter ants is to locate the nest and eliminate the queen. Here are some steps to help you identify and destroy a carpenter ant nest both inside and outside.
Find the Nest
Follow a scent trail or inspect suspect wood for visible signs of damage, keeping in mind that ants typically forage 300 feet from their nest. Carpenter ants are frequently found nesting near sinks, tubs, and other high-moisture areas in the home. Outdoors, look for apparent moisture damage around tree stumps, firewood stacks, and wood structures.
Dismantle the Nest
When you find a nest indoors, apply insecticide dust by drilling holes into the wall near the nest and injecting the dust. Non-toxic alternatives include borax, boric acid, and diatomaceous earth. The treatment may need to be repeated several times. If the nest is outside, drench it with a liquid insecticide sprayer.
Take note that insecticides can be harmful to children and pets. Follow the directions on the label strictly.
If you cannot locate the nest or it is difficult to access, place slow-acting granular bait near entry points and moist areas where ants are likely to congregate. You can also spray foam or gel baits into cracks, through nail holes in walls, plumbing gaps, and directly into ant tunnels. Ants will hopefully bring the bait back to the nest, where it will kill the entire colony.
It is important to note that pesticides should never be sprayed on ants. Individually killing them defeats the purpose because a dead worker or scout cannot bring the bait back to the colony to share with its comrades.
Be Proactive about Repairs around the House
Upgrading or remodelling your home is a critical component. Carpenter ants are a reasonably avoidable problem if people do regular house maintenance and notice a problem with the wood. Therefore, it’s crucial to pay close attention to bathroom walls where grout is missing or plumbing leaks.
If these steps are ineffective, contact a pest control expert in your area who specializes in carpenter ant control.
